Air Canada (AC.B.T) has threatened to pull its sponsorship of the National Hockey League if "immediate" and "serious" action isn't taken to address the long-standing controversy over player-on-player hits to the head, the Ottawa Sun reported Thursday.
The airline, one of the NHL's biggest corporate backers, expressed its concern in a strongly worded letter Wednesday to Commissioner Gary Bettman from Denis Vandal, Air Canada's director of marketing and communications.
The letter follows Tuesday night's controversial hit by Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara on the Montreal Canadiens' Max Pacioretty. The league reviewed the incident but decided not to suspend or otherwise punish Chara.
Vandal, noting this and "several other incidents involving career-threatening and life-threatening headshots in the NHL recently," said the issue is becoming bad for Air Canada's brand. He urged the league to act "before we are encountered with a fatality."
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told the Ottawa newspaper's owner, QMI Agency, in an email Thursday morning that the league won't get into a war of words with Air Canada.
"We referred them to our public statement," Daly said. "We have no intention of engaging with them further at this point."
Air Canada officials didn't immediately respond to emails or phone calls, the Sun said.

QUEBEC CITY (AP)--Montreal police said Thursday that they have opened a criminal investigation into the on-ice hit by the Boston Bruins' Zdeno Chara that left Max Pacioretty of the Canadiens with a severe concussion and cracked verterbra.
Police officials said they're acting on a request earlier Thursday from Quebec's director of criminal and penal prosecutions. After evidence is collected, it will be determined if there are grounds for prosecution, police said.
The National Hockey League has announced that won't be suspending Chara for Tuesday night's hit, when he slammed Pacioretty into a glass partition at Bell Centre in Montreal.
There has been strong debate this season over injuries from hits to the head. Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is among those sidelined with such an injury.
