LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K. companies are concerned the country's workforce lacks the key skills needed to help them expand their businesses, a survey from the British Chambers of Commerce's showed Friday.
The survey also revealed that only 20% of the firms had trained an apprentice between March 2010 and April 2011, despite government efforts to encourage companies to develop such programs. The BCC said this highlights the need for Prime Minister David Cameron's coalition government to do more to show the benefits of long-term training programs and boost employment.
Of the 6,000 companies surveyed by the BCC, 45% said they found it difficult to find the right member of staff for a position. And, as well as citing a lack of specialized skills, many firms said that a lack of "soft" skills--such as good time keeping or communication--were also a problem.
"Developing the capability of our workforce is crucial for individual companies as well as the U.K.'s economic competitiveness," said John Longworth, director general at the BCC. Longworth added the survey results confirm "that many firms looking to recruit are stymied by the poor skills available within the local labor pool."
Youth unemployment is currently at a record high, the U.K. economy is struggling to grow and Bank of England Governor Mervyn King has said the country now faces what could be the most serious financial crisis ever.
This is a testing time for the U.K. economy and firms want to employ the most capable staff in order to help them grow and help boost the economy, but a lack of essential skills is one of an array of issues weighing on their confidence and ability to do so, the BCC said.
Firms surveyed underscored their lack of confidence in the U.K.'s education system, while taking on apprentices wasn't viewed as a widespread practice and reliable way of investing in staff by training them to have the skills deemed essential for various jobs.
However, those firms surveyed that did run an apprenticeship program said they were beneficial to their firm's long-term business.
"Our statistics show that the quality level of many apprenticeships is not high enough, and too few businesses see apprenticeships as relevant to their sector," Longworth said. "More must be done to put apprenticeships at the heart of workplace-based training and future economic growth."

Premierminister David Cameron will diese Entwicklung mit der Schaffung von rund einer Viertelmillion zusätzlicher Lehrstellen vorantreiben. Dabei soll das Schweizer Lehrlingssystem als Vorbild dienen. Laut Hans-Ulrich Bigler, Direktor des Schweizerischen Gewerbeverbands, ein erfolgreiches Modell. Im Gegensatz zu Ländern mit akademischen Modellen hatte die Schweiz während der Finanzkrise die tiefste Jugendarbeitslosigkeit.
